Penang Architecture and Wall Art

One of the amazing things about our entire trip was seeing the different architecture.  Penang was no different and had lots of amazing historical and structural details.  Here Aaron is checking out a Chinese Religious Temple.  I am not exactly sure what religion these temples belonged to but the use of incense was everywhere around Penang.

As we were out exploring Penang, Oliver's favorite structural site was the crosswalk buttons! Here you can see how the roads, residences, and businesses were set up.

Another view of the street without vehicles in the way!

Oliver found these number statues right around the corner from our homestay. As he loves numbers, he wanted pictures in front of all of the numbers. I will spare you the monotony though and share just one cute one!

This is a government building which was built by the British several hundred years ago.  The style is definitely British but there is a couple areas on the building where you can see some Malay influence.

The tiled walkways were very unique to us.  Every change in tile represents another residence...like a long row of townhouses. I didn't get a good picture of the doorway but the black with gold on the right is a doorway.  And these were just as ornate as the tiled walkways and walls.  However the doors were something like 8 feet tall!
Definitely magnificent!

Almost all buildings residential or business were covered in archways just like this one! It was a nice reprieve from the sun as it was blazing hot while we were there.

During our wanderings, we stumbled upon this cemetery opened in 1786! Unfortunately, it was only used for about a hundred years and has fallen into disrepair. Over the years there has also been storm damage although the city is trying to clean it up now.

The view from the entrance of the cemetery makes it look like a peaceful park but as you get into the cemetery you start to see the damage caused over the years including some mishaps from trying to clean the cemetery up!

The most unique thing about Penang was the street art.  One type of art was iron sculptures! Check out the following:

The next type of wall art were paintings on the walls.
These were found both up high and down low.

Some were more interactive than others!
Carson texting Marilyn!

My favorite!

Either Oliver is looking up Marilyn's dress or he is waiting for a story!
